How long does it take to prepare for the PMP Exam?Jun 17, 2017
You know, I have seen some PMP® ‘experts’ out there that give a strong recommendation that you will need to allocate no less than six months to prepare for the PMP® exam. These are big companies with reputable training materials - and a respectable number of customers. Then there are others who offer 4-day boot camps where they will supposedly have you ready to take the PMP® exam after four days.
How are these recommendations so far apart? I know from experience that the truth lies somewhere in between.
A 4-day course is going to cram too much material in a too-short amount of time. Sure, they may present all the material over four days, but it will still be up to you to take it home, digest and learn it.
On the other hand, six months is a long time - there is a too big risk a student could eventually fade off from their study routine. Then you’re back in the same boat - cramming at the end, frantically trying to sort through material.
My coaching programs range usually between one and two months. Determined students can follow my checklist in 30 days by working two or more hours per day; while students with only an hour a day to devote to studying will be fully prepared after 60 days.
No matter your timeline, they key to successful studying is to put aside a set time every day. Treat it as your private time where you will be undisturbed in your study space, so you can digest each section of the material.
I’ve had students voice concerns that they can’t dedicate 1-2 hours a day to study for the PMP®. I get it, we all have time constraints; I have a busy life too. But the bottom line is, when it comes to passing the PMP®, you’ll get out of it what you put in. Earning this three-letter designation after your name takes an investment – in time and money – but most important, it’s an investment in your career.
My advice to pass the PMP® exam: have a study plan, be vigilant, and don’t be shy in letting everyone know this is your time, every day, not to be bothered. Just get it done – you’ll be glad you did! Cheers and Happy Father’s Day.
